Pupa

Pupa series are large-scale porcelain slab work, references the three-year incubation of studio practice in Japan. Over time, my ceramicist’s work absorbed the nutrients of the surroundings to filter my internalised understanding of the Japanese ceramic context. Tangible expressions of this are seen in the delicate embedding of tensha transfer paper within the porcelain, best appreciated backlit in the bright afternoon sun showing the delicacy of the porcelain. I selected transfer paper whit traditional Japanese patterns, each with its symbolic meaning and embedded it between two layers of porcelain as opposed to typically applying it to the surface. In this way, transfer paper remains almost unvisebl and gives to observer a new perspective when it is looked under the light.
