Echo of a wyrm
Born in 1978, I am a French visual artist and ceramist. After 10 years working on other mediums, I came across porcelain in 2015. For 4 years, I was artist-in-residence in a Limoges porcelain factory, where I learned how to produce cast porcelain, in the pure tradition of Limoges porcelain. Then I began to feel the need to work differently. I knew I wanted to keep porcelain at the heart of my work, but I also wanted to take it elsewhere, to combine it with other materials so that I felt free to explore any kind of form or scale. Since 2019, my porcelain sculptures are made up of thousands of porcelain scales fixed on different medium, depending of which form I want to create. Made in July 2025 for Blanc de Chine, « Echo of a wyrm » is part of my Endless serie. About 1200 high fired (1400°) white porcelain scales composed this sculpture. Half of them are left in white biscuit, while the rest are glazed and covered with platinum luster then fired again at 820°. The main technical challenge was to create the feeling of movement, which is central to my work as a way for me to make the living visible. Each row of scales is first drawn then accurately laid. I fixed one by one each porcelain scales with silicon and long pins on a hand sculpted foam. This structure allows me to create complex and light shapes. Deeply inspired by Asian philosophies, particularly the 2 concepts of Yin & Yang and Samsara, my current work explores 2 main lines: the idea of cycle of life which is incessant and universal, and the perpetual search for a balance born from contrasts and oppositions. « Echo of a wyrm » is the perfect expression of this. Like an infinite knot, a never-ending cycle, this sculpture has neither beginning nor end. An hybrid, endless and reptilian creature born from intertwined forms. The impression of strength and power is palpable. But the delicacy and fragility of porcelain soften this tension. Strength and fragility are balanced to give life to a new form of harmony.
