The smog and hope
Life has many vicissitudes but, living in a troublesome part of the world makes the mind full of disturbance; emotions and thoughts change to a chaotic mixture of happiness and grief. It becomes an amorphous mass, like a white smoggy cloud, shadowing the mind. Always present! Finding peace is a crucial need! I use traditional geometric patterns with its regular, symmetrical and repetitive features and carve them on the clay body that needs accuracy in hope of putting my turbulent mind into an order. This work shows the constant presence of worries and concerns alongside hope. I make one part of my work with slab clay and hand carve geometric patterns on the surface. Then, I continue to shape the work by hand, using porcelain paper clay. The paper clay gives me the possibility of making cracked surfaces to emphasis the contrast between smooth surfaces of regular patterns and uneven cracked surfaces. Sometimes, I make narrow cylinders and put them around the piece to protect it of deformation and damage during the firing. I’ve fired the piece at 1200° C. I’ve made the porcelain clay myself. The search for available and purchasable raw materials with the lowest levels of impurities was an interesting challenge. Achieving purity to provide a white clay deepened the meaning of working with porcelain for me.
