Thresholds of Coherence

Fired deliberately beyond the conventional firing range for porcelain — at over 1300°C — this large-scale, membrane-thin sculpture captures a moment of transition, frozen in fire. The raw structure, once orderly, has collapsed under the extreme heat, yet from this disintegration a new spatial order emerges. The piece crystallizes that fragile instant when a system is both ending and beginning — when coherence is being renegotiated within a liminal space. Thresholds of Coherence mirrors the precarious state of our world, where old structures and narratives — political, ecological, social — are breaking down, and the contours of new systems are only just forming. Through its skeletal, perforated surfaces, the sculpture invites viewers to inhabit both absence and presence, dissolution and renewal. Its seeming fragility belies its strength: it is precisely through collapse that a deeper order is born. In this work, fire is not a destructive force but a sculptor of thresholds — a reminder that what we call failure may be the first gesture of transformation.
