Foraminifera
Foraminifera is a continuation of Kay Aplin’s investigation into observing and magnifying micro-organisms which has been the focus of her practice since 2013. Foraminifera developed out of a residency at Interface, Connemara in Ireland in June 2023. Over a four-week period, Kay investigated the geology and ecology of Connemara, collecting samples of moss, lichen, fossils and flora. Each day was spent walking the land, exploring the of the inlets, bogs, and pathways of Connemara, uncovering its histories and topographies. Kay designed a series of forms which represent microscopic fossils, foraminifera, on the beaches of Dogs Bay in Connemara. Her techniques included slip casting porcelain to create multi-layered sculptures composed of hundreds of individual components, which were wood fired with soda to 1280 degrees, developing glazes that visually reference the surface textures of moss and lichen. The resulting work was created for an exhibition at Watts Gallery in 2024 as part of The Ceramic House curatorial project Edges, produced by Kay Aplin and Joseph Young. Edges explored ceramics and sound art practice through the work of artists from Estonia, Ireland and the UK between 2022-2024. https://www.theceramichouse.co.uk/edges/watts/
