Before Silence
Before Silence is an unique piece. This sculptural work draws inspiration from the urgent transformation of marine ecosystems under the pressure of climate change. Evoking the complex beauty of coral formations, Before Silence serves as both a tribute and a warning, a fragile monument to what is at risk of disappearing. Constructed in porcelain paperclay, the piece combines meticulous surface texture with organic vertical forms. Layers of intricately folded, pleated, and coiled clay mimic the living architecture of coral reefs. These delicate structures are intentionally rendered in pale, almost bleached hues, referencing the widespread whitening of coral caused by rising ocean temperatures. The cracked glaze on the rounded upper forms introduces a sense of rupture and decay, suggesting the gradual erosion of the reef’s integrity. It speaks to a world coming undone, not abruptly, but through an almost imperceptible process of collapse. And yet, among the desaturation, a faint presence of green remains. This soft, translucent hue emerges quietly across the textured surface, a visual metaphor for hope and renewal. It suggests that even in the face of environmental trauma, nature may retain its capacity for resilience if we act in time. Before Silence explores the tension between loss and endurance, silence and memory, fragility and strength. It invites the viewer into a space of reflection: on beauty that endures even as it fades, and on the delicate threads that bind us to the ecosystems we threaten to lose.
