Cuspide
My work is realized through slab-building techniques, shaping the structure and texturizing the surfaces with multiple layers of fine terra sigillata slip. I use engobes and terra sigillata to evoke a resonance with ancient ceramics. The surface textures are inspired by the ancient Japanese Jomon pottery. I am fascinated by barren, rocky landscapes. The stones that rise like monoliths give me a sense of elemental origins. Through my work, I aim to represent these elements to evoke deep feelings. The vertical components suggest a connection between earth and sky, while the horizontal elements symbolize terrestrial life. My formal research focuses on techniques from different eras—sometimes distant from each other—but skillfully hybridized and renewed through decades of experience. From a symbolic perspective, my works—essential, totemic, and of primordial, timeless value—seem to reach upward, alluding to spiritual asceticism. My latest creations are inspired by folds, twists, and interpenetrations reminiscent of the rigid, compact folds of kimonos. The work "Cuspide" is inspired by menhirs and the spires of Gothic cathedrals. It represents a connection between earth and sky, serving as a passage between earthly life and celestial existence.
